The Club That Has to Agree With Its Neighbours

A hybrid is defined entirely by the two clubs it sits between. Fit it in isolation and you have bought an expensive orphan.

Why hybrids go wrong

Bought Off a Rack, Built for Nobody in Particular

Most hybrids in most bags were bought individually, off the shelf, with whatever shaft the box contained. That shaft is typically a wood shaft, lighter and longer than the iron it is meant to replace, and the resulting club sits between two neighbours it has nothing in common with.

The symptom is familiar: the hybrid either flies further than the club above it or refuses to launch at all, and it feels alien in the hands compared with the irons either side. Players blame the category. The category is fine; the build is not.

Our approach is simple and it is arithmetic. Measure the 5-iron. Measure the 5-wood. Build a club whose length, mass, balance point and loft sit between them.

Not always the exact midpoint. If your iron shafts are far heavier than your wood shafts, we bias toward the iron side to keep the transition honest.
Shaft choice

Iron Shaft or Wood Shaft in a Hybrid?

Both are legitimate and the choice is not a matter of taste. It depends on which side of the gap you want the club to behave like.

A hybrid built with an iron shaft plays like a very forgiving long iron: lower launch, more control, a steeper delivery that works out of rough. A hybrid built with a wood shaft plays like a small fairway wood: easier launch, more speed, a shallower delivery that prefers a decent lie.

We decide by looking at what job you need done. If the hybrid is replacing a 4-iron you cannot get airborne, wood shaft. If it is a control club for tee shots on tight par fours, iron shaft. Then we build to the mass plan either way.

How Many Hybrids Do You Actually Need?

The honest answer for a lot of players is more than one, and for a few it is none.

Pattern A

One Hybrid, Long Iron Retained

Suits players with enough speed to launch a 4-iron. The hybrid covers the gap above it and nothing changes below.

Pattern B

Two Hybrids, Irons From Six

The most common outcome on this bench. Two matched hybrids replacing the 4 and 5, built as a pair rather than bought separately.

Pattern C

No Hybrid, High-Loft Woods

Some players launch a seven or nine wood far more easily than any hybrid. If the data says so, we build that instead.

Matched pairs matter If you carry two hybrids, they should be built together to the same progression — half an inch apart, one swingweight point apart, three degrees apart. Buying them in different seasons from different shops is how bags end up with two clubs that go the same distance.
