The Seven Numbers That Decide How a Club Feels

None of them are secret. They are just rarely written down anywhere a golfer can read them, which is how "feel" ended up sounding like a mystery.

Number one

Static Weight

The total mass of the assembled club. Put the whole thing on a scale and read the number. Typical finished figures run around 300 to 320 grams for a driver, 400 to 440 for a mid iron, and 520 to 560 for a putter.

Static weight matters most for fatigue and for players with any strength limitation. It matters surprisingly little for feel, because it says nothing about distribution. This is the number most shops quote and the number that explains the least.

Swingweight

Swingweight is a balance measurement, not a weight. A club is laid on a fulcrum a fixed distance from the butt and the scale reads how much the head end wants to fall. The result is reported on a letter-and-number grid: C8, D0, D4 and so on. Each step is one point.

It is an old and slightly crude system, and it still works, because it captures the one thing static weight ignores — how far the mass sits from your hands.

Most golfers can detect a change of about two points blind. Sensitive players notice one. Below that, arguing about it is not a productive use of a session, which is why our published tolerance is half a point rather than a tenth.

Number three

Balance Point

Balance the finished club across one finger and measure from the butt cap to the balance position. That distance in inches is the balance point, and it is the most honest single description of where a club carries its mass.

We record it on every ledger card because it survives changes that scramble the other numbers. Cut half an inch off a club and swingweight drops; balance point tells you what actually moved.

A counterweighted club and a light-headed club can share a swingweight while having balance points more than an inch apart. Players feel that difference immediately even when they cannot name it.

Shaft Raw Weight and Tip Weighting

Raw shaft weight is what the uncut shaft weighs before anything is done to it. Catalogue figures are nominal; real shafts vary by several grams within the same model and flex, which is why every shaft on our rack is weighed at intake rather than trusted.

Tip weights are small slugs inserted into the tip end during assembly to lift swingweight without changing the head. They are legitimate and useful in small amounts. Past about six grams they start to change how the shaft loads, and at that point the honest answer is that the wrong shaft was chosen.

Our internal rule: if the mass plan needs more than six grams of tip weight, we revisit the shaft before we reach for the slug drawer.

Grip mass is the single easiest place to change a club's balance without touching the head, and the one most often ignored.

A grip is a weight decision wearing a comfort disguise. Swapping a 50 gram rubber grip for a 62 gram corded one drops swingweight by roughly two points across the whole set, which is a larger change than most golfers would ever knowingly accept.

Tape wraps compound it. Each additional wrap under the grip adds two to three grams and about 1/64 of an inch of diameter. Building up to four wraps to enlarge a grip is a legitimate technique, but it is a mass change and it belongs in the ledger.

We record grip model and wrap count on every card for exactly this reason. When the grips are replaced three years later by somebody else, that line is what stops the club from quietly changing character.

Read the table as directions, not laws Every figure above is an approximation for a typical mid iron. Longer clubs respond more to length changes and less to grip changes. This is why we measure the actual club rather than predicting from a chart — the chart is for explaining, the scale is for deciding.
