Installing a grip is one of the few jobs in club building that a competent person can learn in an afternoon. Tape the shaft, wet the tape with solvent, wet the inside of the grip, slide it on, line it up, done. It is quick, satisfying, and it is also where a surprising amount of measurement error enters a set.
The solvent that makes installation possible does not vanish when the grip is on. It sits between the grip's inner wall and the tape, soaked into the tape adhesive, and it needs time and airflow to leave. How much is present depends on how generous the installer was, and generous is normal — a dry install is a stuck grip halfway on, which is a much worse problem.
We weighed this properly on our own bench over a run of thirty regrips. A club weighed within five minutes of installation came in between four and nine grams heavier than the same club weighed the following morning. The average was six grams.
If a shop hands you a swingweight figure for a club they regripped twenty minutes ago, they have measured the solvent as well as the club.
On its own, a shop quoting a slightly wrong swingweight number is a minor sin. The problem is when that number is used to make a decision.
Here is the sequence we see. A player has a set regripped. The builder measures immediately, finds the clubs reading a point and a bit heavier than target, and helpfully removes weight from the head to "correct" it. The solvent evaporates overnight. Now the whole set is a point and a bit light against the original target, and the correction has permanently damaged what was a correct build.
That has walked into this shop more than once, and it is always presented as "they regripped it and now it feels wrong".
Two weighings, always.
The first is of the grip itself, dry, before it goes anywhere near a shaft. That figure goes on the ledger card as the grip's true mass, and it is the number used in the mass plan. Catalogue grip weights are nominal and real grips vary by three or four grams within the same model and batch.
The second is of the finished club, the following morning, cold. That is the number that goes in the swingweight line. Anything measured in between is treated as informational rather than final.
Same-day regrips still go out same day — we are not going to hold your clubs overnight for a seven dollar job. But if a regrip is part of a build where swingweight matters, that build gets the overnight cure and the cold measurement like everything else.
There are ways to speed evaporation. Compressed air blown up the shaft through a vent hole moves a lot of it in minutes. Warm airflow helps. Both are legitimate and both are used in high-volume operations that cannot wait.
What we avoid is the other family of shortcuts: solvent substitutes chosen purely for fast flash-off, or installing with so little liquid that the tape barely activates. The first group tends to attack some grip compounds over time. The second produces a grip that seems fine for a month and then twists under the hands on a wet morning, which is a genuinely dangerous failure.
Slow is fine. Slow is a night.
Practically, three things.
None of this is difficult or expensive. It is simply a habit, and habits are most of what separates a set that stays consistent for a decade from one that drifts.
