How Many Wraps of Tape Your Hands Actually Want

Under every grip is a strip of double-sided tape. The number of times it goes round is a size decision and a mass decision at once, and almost nobody writes it down.

Ask a shop what size grips you have and you will usually get a word: standard, midsize, jumbo. Ask what is underneath them and you will usually get a pause. The tape count is a real specification with real consequences and it is treated as an afterthought almost everywhere.

What one wrap does

A single layer of standard double-sided grip tape adds roughly 1/64 of an inch to the diameter of the butt section and between two and three grams of mass. Neither figure sounds like much. Both are within the range golfers detect.

Building from one wrap to four takes a standard grip up to something close to a midsize in diameter, and adds seven to nine grams of mass at the very end of the club. That mass sits about as far from the head as it is possible to be, so it drops swingweight by roughly one and a half to two points.

  • One extra wrap: about +1/64 in diameter, about +2.5 g, about −0.5 swingweight points
  • Three extra wraps: about +3/64 in, about +7.5 g, about −1.5 points
  • Standard grip on four wraps vs midsize grip on one wrap: similar diameter, quite different mass distribution and feel
Two clubs can be the same grip size and two swingweight points apart. The difference is invisible unless somebody wrote down the tape count.

How we choose the count

Three measurements decide it, taken during the hand and posture stage of any session.

Hand length, from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger, is the primary input. It correlates with required grip diameter better than glove size does, because glove sizing is driven as much by palm width as by finger length.

Palm width across the knuckles is the secondary input. A player with long fingers and a narrow palm wants something different from one with short fingers and a wide palm, and glove size alone cannot separate them.

Grip pressure is the input everybody skips, and it is the one that most often overrides the other two. A player who holds the club very firmly usually plays better with a slightly larger effective diameter, because it reduces how much they can squeeze. A very light-handed player generally wants less, so the fingers can wrap and feel the club.

We take the pressure reading twice: at address and near the top of the backswing. People who hold lightly at address and clamp down in transition are common, and they want a different answer from people who are consistent.

Tape or a bigger grip?

Both routes reach a similar diameter. They do not reach a similar club.

Going up a grip size adds mass in one lump distributed along the whole grip, changes the taper profile of the finished handle, and usually changes the material and texture too, because manufacturers do not offer every model in every size.

Adding wraps keeps the grip model, texture and taper you already like and builds the diameter up from underneath. It also lets us build a non-uniform diameter, which is genuinely useful: extra wraps under the lower hand only, for players whose trailing hand overpowers the shot, is one of the more effective small adjustments we make.

Our default is to reach for tape first and change grip model only when the material or texture is also wrong. It keeps one variable in play instead of three.

The consistency problem

Here is the failure we see constantly. A player has their set regripped at a shop, two clubs at a time, over a period of months, by different people. Nobody recorded the wrap count. The result is a set where the 6-iron sits on one wrap and the 8-iron on three, which means those two clubs differ in diameter and by a full swingweight point.

The player cannot describe what is wrong. They just quietly stop trusting the 8-iron. We find some version of this in perhaps a quarter of the sets that come across the audit bench.

It is entirely preventable with one line on a card.

What goes on the ledger

Every card records the grip model, the measured mass of that specific grip, the tape width, and the wrap count, per club. When you regrip — here or anywhere — that line is what allows the next person to reproduce what you had, or to change it deliberately rather than accidentally.

If you take one thing from this note: next time somebody regrips your clubs, ask them how many wraps they used, and write the answer down yourself. It costs nothing and it protects a set from drifting apart over a decade of small jobs.
